Concise description of the proposed workshop:

The Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) was launched on 30 September 2011, at a workshop organized by ECA and the African Union Commission (AUC) held during the 6th IGF in Nairobi, to act as a platform for an inclusive multilateral, multi-stakeholder and multilingual discussion on issues pertinent to the Internet in Africa in general and Internet Governance issues in particular.

As stated in its terms of reference, the AfIGF shall meet every year at different venue in each region and at the IGF venue and wherever possible during Multi-stakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) consultations. To this effect, the AfIGF plans to organize a workshop during the 7th IGF in Baku with the aim of consolidating the AfIGF activities, review issues pertinent to Africa with respect to the themes of the 7th IGF and contribute African perspectives including developing a multi-stakeholder plan of action for the forthcoming planning year. The workshop will be coordinated by the ECA, AUC and the four African sub-regional IGFs with Egypt as Chair of the AfIGF Bureau.

Presentations will include from UNECA on IGF in Africa with particular reference to Internet Infrastructure; AUC with a focus on domain names and status on dotafrica and Egypt as current chair of AfIGF on the developments and way forward. There will also exchanges from key stakeholders, national and sub-regional IGFs represented as well as input from other regions. The workshop will facilitate sharing of knowledge and best practices from national and sub-regional IGFs. The session will run for three hours.
